Monography: More Than a Photograph

Monography: More Than a Photograph

This one is special to me.

When I first started looking for a Montreal location for Monography, we were constantly on the move. David and Grant would drive into Montreal at night, we would visit spaces, and they would often head back to Toronto right after. At the time, I never really had the opportunity to get to know the people behind the business.

But one thing was impossible to miss: their commitment to what they were building.

Monography was born in Toronto, and following the success of their first two locations, I had the opportunity to help them find their Montreal home.

The attention to detail that David and Grant brought to every decision was impeccable. I had rarely seen people so committed to their vision. They knew exactly what they wanted to create and were determined to rethink the traditional photography experience.

Seeing what they eventually built in Montreal with my own eyes reminded me exactly why I love what I do.

It wasn’t until later that I had the opportunity to ask David a simple question:

Why did you start Monography?

His answer completely changed the way I saw the business.

Before becoming an entrepreneur, David worked full-time as a nurse. Through his work, he witnessed people saying goodbye to their loved ones and saw firsthand how meaningful a photograph could become — sometimes one of the few tangible memories left behind.

A photograph has the ability to preserve something we otherwise cannot keep: a person, a relationship, a chapter of our lives, or a moment that eventually becomes a memory.

Hearing David’s story made me realize that Monography was never just about photography.

It was about making it easier for people to capture the moments — and the people — they never want to forget.

Suddenly, the incredible attention to detail, the long drives, the late nights and the determination I had witnessed while helping David and Grant find their Montreal location made even more sense.

There was a purpose behind everything they were building.

Having the opportunity to play even a small role in bringing their Montreal chapter to life is something I am incredibly proud of.

This is one of the reasons commercial real estate means so much more to me than simply finding a space and completing a transaction. I get the privilege of meeting the people behind these businesses, hearing the stories that drive them, and sometimes helping give their vision a place to become real.

Because sometimes, finding the right space isn’t just about helping a business expand. It’s about giving someone’s purpose a place to grow — and watching their vision become part of someone else’s story.
